Over the past few months, the Seton Habitat Team has been presenting progress updates on our second Habitat for Humanity build. With this update, we would like to share with you some information that we received from Habitat for Humanity of South Collin County (Habitat- SCC). We had mentioned in a previous article that the Habitat homes are not provided free of charge to individuals; instead, the recipients have a mortgage with Habitat-SCC and pay property taxes that are escrowed by Habitat-SCC.
In 2016, the Habitat homeowner families collectively paid $96,376.34 in Collin County property taxes. That's $96,376.34 in funding for local services like public schools, community health services, fire and police protection, streets, roads, flood control projects, and many other services.
Pictured above is the Jama Family, representing ALL of the Habitat homeowner families in their payment of the property taxes. Seton and Interfaith Partners sponsored the Jama Family home build for Habitat in 2015.
Additionally, Habitat-SCC has completed 393 home construction and repair projects since 1998 in southern Collin County. Of these projects, 89 were the construction of new, safe and affordable houses, transforming the lives of 288 deserving family members, including 164 children. Homeowner and repair families' payments are used to build more Habitat houses. Since 1998, Habitat-SCC homeowner families have paid more than $616,000 in property taxes to Collin County, the cities, and the schools.
