The emphasis in the instruction “Take only what is needed” is an interesting reverse of the previous instruction “Take nothing that is not needed”. The Lord mentions basic items such as footwear for a journey such as sandals and minimal clothing. The Lord is aware that we have some needs which prudence and human frailty require. We are made of flesh and blood and we have our limits. We should take care of our simple human needs.
The additional caution is made to “greet no one along the way”. That sounds strange until you begin to realize that one should remain focused on their goal. The ministry or service to the Lord or others is not merely a social event. The disciples’ purpose is found in the sharing of the Gospel message with the town or community in which they arrive. If they delay with casual conversation “along the way” they may not make it to their destination. Wisdom is found here. As we should not chatter about things and get ourselves into various predicaments in being overly social or even engage in negative conversation, but rather we should be reflective and cautious in what we say. Scripture encourages us to say only the “good things” we need to hear.
Reflection Questions:
What do we need to lead a balanced life?
How might socializing distract us from our purpose?
