A Christian leader died today in Egypt. As we approach the Paschal or Easter Season this part of the world stands out in our minds. We should not forget the great events that allowed Moses and the tribes of Israel to journey to their own land. The land of Egypt gave refuge to Abraham, Joseph and the sons of Jacob. It also gave refuge to the Holy Family in their most dire moment. Our Lord Jesus himself would surely remember for a lifetime the sights and sounds of that busy land with its commerce and great monuments.
It is believed that St. Mark himself, the writer of the Gospel, founded the Church in Alexandria. The history of the Christian faith in Alexandria allowed St. Cyril to establish the greatest catechetical school in the ancient world in tandem with its great library. It was a great center of learning. The origin of Christian monasticism began among the Desert Fathers of Egypt. The defense of Christian doctrine in that land was produced by such persons as St. Athanasius and St. Anthony of the Desert whose influences have been felt throughout the centuries.
A Christian leader died today in Egypt who worked strenuously for his own Coptic people, and also for tolerance among people of all faiths. They called him Pope Shenouda III. He was considered to be the 117th successor of St. Mark as the Patriarch of Alexandria. As a monk and priest and later bishop he was a man of prayer and faith. As an intellectual and writer he taught many people to understand virtue and the Christian faith. As a leader of his Coptic Church and people he was a master of charity who preached and worked for tolerance.
He was pragmatic and skillful in negotiating with the leaders of his time. He not only worked with his local religious and political leaders, but also connected his Church to the World Council of Churches and the United Nations. Pope John Paul II, who possessed many of the same virtues, talents and goals met with him to work for unity among people.
A Christian leader died today in Egypt. He will be greatly missed by his people. They number about ten million souls. He led them for over forty years both in sorrow and joy. We should pray for him, but more importantly to pray for our brothers and sisters in that part of the world. May tolerance and virtue continue to grow among all people.
