The disciples were instructed to “cast out demons.” Matthew 10:8
How do we understand and apply the instruction to “cast out demons”? We are to put aside that which is evil. Our own lives need to be in right order, and then we will be able to help others. With the help of God we can help others put evil out of their lives.
The supernatural order of evil is also indicated here in reference to the demonic. In being open to what is good, or Godly, we naturally put aside what is evil. In this way we “cast out demons”. In one incident in the Gospels the disciples ask the Lord why they cannot drive out a certain demon. The Lord responded that some can only be driven out by “prayer and fasting.”
Our faith, our morals, our self-discipline and our prayer all allow us to be better tools in the hand of God. Openness to God allows us to be more open to what is good. We are called to bring goodness into people’s lives.
