Seton Habitat Build Update # 3: December 3 and 17, 2016
Seton’s second Habitat for Humanity build continued with our fifth and sixth build dates of December 3
rd and the 19
th. Unfortunately, the December 3
rd build day was a wash out as it rained and our build date was cancelled – just part of the construction business. However, the 17
th build date went on as scheduled. In the intervening weeks following our rainout, the remaining trusses were put in place. (The trusses are the triangular structures that support the roof.) We had a small but dedicated group of SEAS volunteers on the 17
th. It worked out well as the work that needed to be completed that day did not require a large number of volunteers.
While most of the experienced crew chiefs worked attaching supports between the trusses above, the rest of us on the ground level were busy installing the final two doors, anchoring the outside walls to the foundation, and caulking and caulking and then caulking some more. The caulking is critical in making the house air tight to prevent outside hot and cold air from entering the house.
We were blessed with the weather that day. It started in the mid 60’s in the morning to the low 70’s in early afternoon. However, by the time we were packing it up and calling it a day, the temperature started to drop. Thank goodness that cold air blast held off to the following day or the temperature would have been in the 20’s instead of the 60’s. Seton takes off for the holidays and our next scheduled build date is January 7, 2017.
In addition to the Seton volunteers who helped on Build Day #6, the Seton Habitat Team wants to thank:
Parishioner Kyle Duhon for suppling lunch, which was an excellent jambalaya.
Einstein Bros Bagels at Legacy and Independence for donating the coffee.
If you are interested in donating food/lunches/drinks during the build, please contact Jessica Vieira at
Jessica.vieira@acpen.com. Seton parishioners paid for or provided wonderful lunches for the volunteers during the first build in 2015, and several are signed up for this year as well.
Go by and look at the project at 1133 G Avenue in East Plano (down the street from the Douglass Community Center). It will surely inspire you to join us!
